The Issue

Growing up in our beloved neighborhood, the vibrant tapestry of Black-owned businesses and rich community spirit has always been our pride and joy. This corner of Omaha, famous for its close-knit bonds and shared history, is now facing an unwelcome change. A building, which once echoed with hymns as a place of worship, is being considered for conversion into a liquor store. This establishment would not only stand directly across from another church but also within close proximity to our local elementary and high schools.

The proposed liquor store poses more than just an inconvenience; it threatens the character and safety of our neighborhood. Research consistently shows a correlation between liquor stores in residential areas and increased crime rates, including property crime and public disturbances. According to a study by John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, neighborhoods with high densities of liquor stores often report higher rates of violence and disorder. Such a transformation would undermine our community's efforts to maintain a secure, nurturing environment for our children.

Furthermore, the economic landscape of our community is bolstered by locally-owned businesses that reflect our values and cultural heritage. By introducing a liquor store, we risk displacing these cherished establishments and the crucial support they provide to our neighborhood. The National Community Reinvestment Coalition reports that supporting local enterprises strengthens neighborhoods economically and socially, fostering stronger communal ties.

This liquor store development is not a vision of progress for 40th Ames. We strongly urge the city planners and local authorities to reassess and rethink this proposal. We request that they consider alternative establishments that align with our community's values and contribute positively to its growth. Suggestions include community centers, local eateries, or educational resources that can serve as enriching hubs for our youth and residents.

By signing this petition, you are not only advocating for the preservation of our community’s heart and soul but also supporting a better future for our children. Join us in urging our city officials to halt plans for this liquor store and instead, invest in projects that celebrate and enhance the heritage of 40th Ames.

Let us come together to protect the essence of our neighborhood. Sign now to make a stand for a brighter, safer community future.
