Stop The Landfill; Save Our Children

The Issue

Imagine sending your child off to school every morning, knowing that just across the playground sits a massive landfill that spews toxic pollutants into the air, soil, and water. This alarming scenario is one our community in McCreary County, KY, and Scott County, TN, is facing right now.

A proposed landfill threatens to bring immense harm to our environment and our health. Unlike ordinary landfills, this one is designed to accept not only everyday garbage but also hazardous nuclear and medical waste from across the nation. Our children deserve better than to learn and play in the shadow of such danger.

Located precariously close to the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, this landfill would lie directly across from an elementary school and on top of a natural spring that feeds into our local rivers. This isn’t just about keeping our countryside beautiful; it’s about safeguarding the health of our children, preserving our clean water sources, and protecting the rich biodiversity of an invaluable natural habitat.

We cannot afford the consequences. Pollution from this site could leach dangerous toxins into our soil and water, affecting not only our generation but many to come. The risk isn't hypothetical; once contaminated, our water sources could be compromised for decades, posing serious health threats and rendering nearby lands unusable.

Our community deserves better oversight and protection from potentially catastrophic developments. We demand that the authorities reject this landfill proposal and put our children, us, and our animals first.

Please join us in standing up for our community, our environment, and most importantly, our children. Sign this petition to make sure our voices are heard and that our community remains a safe, nurturing place for generations to come.

Show up to Oneida High School on November 4th at 5PM to share your concerns about this disaster of a landfill!

Responded
Thank you for reaching out to me on your petition. I commend you for being a citizen who is concerned enough to take action. As a matter of fact, this is the second petition I have signed concerning this matter, and I have a third one just emailed to me. As you may know we currently have a Coalition comprised of McCreary County, Scott County, and the cities of Winfield, Huntsville and Oneida, Tennessee. We have environmental lawyers that are diligently working toward the blockage of this proposed Landfill. Paperwork has been filed, and we will not stop until we have exhausted every effort to stop the Landfill. I wholeheartedly support this Landfill petition and what it represents for our community’s safety and well-being. By backing this petition, we are taking important steps toward eliminating risks associated with improper waste disposal, such as pollution, hazardous materials exposure, and potential threats to our water supply. My hope is that we can all work together for a common cause – to stop the Landfill! Once again, thank you and please let me know if there is anything else I can do. Sincerely, Jimme W.
