Stop the killing of Canada Geese in Surfside Beach, SC

The Issue

UPDATE: The town has stated they are not contracting with anyone to get rid of our beloved geese. Gooseman Jack has stated that one private resident has contracted him to deter geese from his yard.
This means the comment that he is getting rid of all the geese was not accurate. He has no authority from the town to get rid of the town’s geese. He can, however, deter from his client’s property. Deterring is not getting rid of all the geese, as he misspoke in the heat of the moment.
However, the geese should be safe if these are truths and the previous words were misspoken in anger.
We do still need to reverse the removal of the bird sanctuary status.

Why is the town getting Gooseman Jack to ‘get rid of the geese’ and what makes that legal?

I love the geese. They grace our skies, yards, and waterways with their melodic honking and majestic presence. In Surfside Beach, SC, our community has long cherished these beautiful creatures. However, the town's recent decision to kill the Canada geese population threatens to disrupt this harmonious relationship.

Canada geese are an integral part of our local ecosystem and community identity. They contribute to the biodiversity of our region and serve as a natural attraction for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. Moreover, these geese have historically been part of Surfside Beach's environment, coexisting peacefully with residents and visitors alike.

The decision to kill these birds is not only unnecessarily cruel, but it also undermines our efforts to position Surfside Beach as a beacon of environmental conservation and wildlife protection. By exterminating the geese, we are taking a regressive step away from sustainable living and harmony with nature.

Instead of killing, let's invest in alternative solutions like habitat modifications, use of natural deterrents, and community education programs that promote coexistence. Other towns have successfully managed bird populations through non-lethal means — so can we.

Reverting Surfside Beach to a bird sanctuary can rejuvenate its spirit without sacrificing our feathered friends. This aligns with our tradition of valuing wildlife and preserves the character of our beloved town for future generations.

Let us stand together in opposition to this drastic measure. Encourage the town council to reconsider and adopt humane methods to address our concerns. Please sign this petition to save the Canada geese and restore Surfside Beach as a sanctuary for birds.
