Stop the Kids Online Safety Act

Stop the Kids Online Safety Act
The Issue
I enjoy being able to access the internet without giving any data to the world. The internet is a crucial part of our daily lives, offering a space to connect, learn, and grow. As an avid user, I firmly believe in the freedom it provides. This freedom is rooted in the ability to explore information anonymously and securely—a right that is under threat from the proposed Kids Online Safety Act.
The Kids Online Safety Act aims to enforce stricter regulations on internet usage to protect children. However, its approach is flawed. By stripping away anonymity, it exposes individuals to increased risks of hacking and identity theft. These are not speculative dangers but real threats that have affected countless individuals worldwide. Comparing the amount of reported identity theft incidents between 2023 and 2024, identity theft rose by 9.5% from the previous year. This highlights the vulnerabilities in cybersecurity measures that are continuing to fail more and more, year over year as identity theft continues to grow.
Moreover, the act pressures platforms to excessively limit children's access to content, fearing hefty fines. While child safety is paramount, it's equally important to foster an environment where young minds can access critical information. Many educational websites would fall under restricted categories, thus stifling learning opportunities at a time when digital literacy is more critical than ever.
It's essential to note that many reputable companies already have robust protective measures against illegal activities without compromising user privacy. Parents and guardians also have the tools to enforce safe browsing at home, through filters and controls—an empowerment they must exercise rather than relying solely on draconian legislation.
This act threatens what the internet and the USA deeply stand for: freedom. As an American, I believe that the solution lies in stronger education and awareness about online safety rather than infringing on individual freedoms. We must urge lawmakers to reconsider and stop this bill, preserving the internet as a safe haven of free expression and exploration.
Join me in protecting our internet freedoms for the present and future generations. Sign this petition and help prevent the enactment of the Kids Online Safety Act.
