Stop the implementation of digital ID in our community
The issue
Ever since I learned about the proposed implementation of digital IDs in our community, I've been deeply troubled. Like many of you, I cherish my freedom and independence, and the idea of a digital ID system feels like an infringement on my personal rights and liberties. I fear that such a system would not only breach our privacy but could lead to continuous surveillance, curtailing our freedom in more ways than we can foresee.
Digital IDs, while potentially helpful for streamlining certain processes, often come with significant risks. The most evident is the potential for misuse of our sensitive information. With recent incidents of data breaches and cyber-attacks, entrusting our personal data to a centralized digital ID system seems not only risky but reckless. Financial Losses for example show Self-reported losses from cybercrime in Australia totalled over $33 billion in the 2021 financial year. OPTUS , MEDIBANK, SERVIVE NSW in 2022, names, dates of birth, home addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of millions of current and former customers. LATITUDE 2023
The personal loan and financial services provider suffered a large-scale breach, exposing the data of up to 1.2 million customers and affecting up to 14 million people across Australia and New Zealand.
Top Sectors in 2024:
Health services (20%) and Australian government agencies (17%) reported the most data breaches.
This is a powerful reminder of how vulnerable our data can be, even when it's stored in the most secure systems available.
Furthermore, digital IDs could lead to excessive governmental control over our lives. They might seem convenient, but they also give the government and corporations unprecedented access to our information. We have the right to question how this data would be used and who would have access to it.
I propose that instead of rushing into implementing a digital ID system, we should actively seek out alternative solutions that protect our privacy and personal freedoms while still improving efficiencies. We can advocate for policies that ensure any system in use is voluntary, highly secure, and transparent about how data is managed. Let's push for discussions, community consultations, and independent audits before any decisions are finalized.
Join me in safeguarding our freedoms and protecting our right to privacy. Together, we can demand a careful consideration of the potential implications of digital IDs and seek solutions that don't compromise our liberties. Please sign this petition to make our voices heard. Together, we can halt the implementation of digital IDs until all questions and concerns are thoroughly addressed, ensuring our rights remain intact.
