Petition updateStop the imminent removal of Abbey Kyeyune - a gay man - back to UgandaAbbey was deported by the Home Office on Tuesday 9th May 2017

After a long period of detention at Campsfield Immigration Removal Centre, and after an equally long sequence of legal interventions to try and get Abbey's earlier asylum decisions properly and fairly reviewed in the light of new evidence, the Home Office enforced Abbey's removal from the UK yesterday.
At the end of last week, Abbey was told by the Campsfield authorities that he would be transferred to another detention centre, but initially they would not say where, or exactly when, he would be taken. On Tuesday morning (9th May) the transfer began and Abbey was briefly able to contact his lawyer and tell her that he was being transferred to Harmondsworth detention centre. He was then required to switch off his phone.
In the early afternoon Abbey managed to alert his lawyer to the fact that the Home Office were not transferring him; instead, they were deporting him in line with arrangements that they had not previously revealed to him or to his legal representative.
By the time the truth of the situation became known, there was no time to make any further interventions, Abbey could not be contacted, and we did not have any reliable information about the flight which might be used for Abbey's deportation. The Home Office had effectively used secrecy and isolation in order to prevent any last minute campaign activities.
Our first contact with Abbey, and the first real confirmation of his deportation, was this evening (10th May) when he managed to send a few brief text messages. He was able to tell us that he is in hiding, is being looked after by friends, and that life is hard.
Accordingly, this now seems to be an appropriate time to post a final update and we will subsequently close this campaign.
Abbey and all who have led his campaign wish to thank you most sincerely for the support you have given to his case via this petition and by many other means. The campaign gave Abbey the courage to continue his fight, and gave him time to mount all possible legal challenges. Within the constraints we faced in this case, your support made a difference - even though the final outcome has been the deportation by the UK Government of a gay man to one of the world's most homophobic countries.
Thank you for everything you have done.
