Now, they are threatened by actions that disregard the law and the voices of our communities.

The constitution of Kenya and various land laws dictate that community land cannot be allocated without the input and participation of the community. Public participation is not just a right but a cherished component of our governance framework. Yet in this instance, concerning Murule and Kontareb Kora lands, these legal standards are being blatantly ignored. Additionally, valid court orders aimed at preserving the status quo until proper procedures are followed are being trampled upon. Not only are these acts illegal, but they also undermine our justice system and the rule of law.

It is critical to acknowledge the devastating impact such unlawful actions have on the lives and livelihoods of thousands of community members. The pastoralist way of life, which supports innumerable families, is directly dependent on access to these lands. Beyond the immediate disruption, the illegal allocation compromises future generations' ability to live sustainably in harmony with their environment.

We must demand action from the authorities responsible for overseeing land allocations in Mandera County. It is imperative that they adhere to the legal protocols for land management and prioritise community rights above all. Furthermore, I urge the relevant authorities to engage in genuine public consultations to include the voices of the Murule and Kontareb Kora communities in all land-related decisions.
