A corporation with a troubled track record is about to open a second massive immigration detention facility in Colorado — and there's still time to stop it.

The GEO Group just signed a five-year, $528.7 million federal contract to reopen a former prison in Hudson, a small town of about 1,600 people located 30 miles northeast of Denver, as the Big Horn Immigration Detention Center. The facility would hold up to 1,188 people — nearly the same number as Hudson's entire population.

GEO already operates an immigration detention center in Aurora, where local health officials say the company is blocking an investigation into a possible tuberculosis outbreak. Now the same corporation wants to scale up, adding hundreds more beds while refusing to answer basic questions about when the facility will open, how it will be staffed, or what medical care detainees will receive.

Colorado community members — from Hudson to Denver — are fighting back. Hundreds packed a town council meeting to demand that local leaders explore every legal option to block the facility. Colorado Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper have condemned the plan. The ACLU of Colorado is demanding transparency and accountability.

The lease takes effect August 1. The clock is running.
