STOP The HBCSD from Building a Maintenance and Operations Yard

The Issue

The Huntington Beach City School District (HBCSD) has been approved to build a 7,500 Square Foot maintenance and operations yard at the Kettler District Office at 8750 Dorsett Dr.  The approved plans can be seen on their website https://www.hbcsd.us/mobuilding  The construction project could have significant environmental impacts and adversely affect the quality of life for nearby residents by increasing noise and traffic levels.  An appeal has been filed with the Huntington Beach Planning Commission and a final hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at 6 PM, City Council Chambers, Huntington Beach Civic Center, 2000 Main Street, Huntington Beach, CA 92648

Now is your last chance to let the school district and city know we don't want a maintenance yard in a residential housing tract.   The school district is taking the position that they are exempt from any oversight, public commentary, or environmental studies.  They are making the egregious claim with city planners that they are exempt because this is an "existing" maintenance yard at Kettler.   The whole project is allowed a fast track through planning and approval since they falsely claim that this is a small structure being added to an existing site.  Adding a 7500 sq foot commercial-use building close to residential property lines is not a small structure to an existing site.  No one person in the city believes the district has an "existing" maintenance yard at Ketter.  Parking some trucks in the parking lot does not make it a maintenance yard.  Adding a monstrous 7500 sq foot building will indeed then make it official that there is a maintenance operation going on in a residential community.  Further, the City Zoning Commission has already ruled that all maintenance work must be done inside the proposed building.  However, the architect has no provisions in the drawings for air conditioning for the employee's warehouse working areas.  Adding additional commercial air conditioning units will add a significant noise pollution impact on the "very close" neighboring back yards.  An alternative architectural plan should be investigated to ensure a "sound" decision is being made.

This important issue affects everyone living in our beautiful city, and we must act to protect our community. We therefore call upon the school district to reconsider its decision and explore alternative locations for its maintenance and operations yard that could minimize potential adverse effects on our community. Stand with us today in requesting the Huntington Beach City School District to halt its construction project at the Kettler District Office. Sign this petition to make your voice heard.
