Stop the Harassment and Irresponsible Feeding of Sea Turtles at Playa Piskadó

Stop the Harassment and Irresponsible Feeding of Sea Turtles at Playa Piskadó
The Issue
Sea turtles, some of the most awe-inspiring creatures in Curaçao, are facing an insidious threat: human harassment and irresponsible feeding at Playa Piskadó in Westpunt. As residents and tourists, we might marvel at their grace and charm, yet our actions could be putting them at risk.
These magnificent creatures are protected by law in our land. The national legislation explicitly states, "In the territorial waters and inland bays of Curaçao it is forbidden to catch any sea turtle species" ([no. 48], art.). Nonetheless, it appears that many among us, residents and tourists alike, continue to disregard the protection of Sea turtles.
Sea turtles are not only vital to our marine ecosystem but are also listed as endangered species globally. Despite the legal shields in place in Curaçao, the lack of strong law enforcement and awareness among the people often leaves these vulnerable protection mechanisms redundant.
This petition aims to cease the irresponsible behaviour of feeding and harassing sea turtles at Playa Piskadó and understand the necessity of maintaining the natural habitats of these creatures. We ought to see the rules not as hindrances but as collective steps to preserve our biodiversity and take pride in contributing to the well-being of our island's natural heritage.
Why "FEEDING SEA TURTLES is HARMFUL"?
This issue transcends individual actions. It represents an urgent plea for strengthening law enforcement, heightening awareness, and encouraging active engagement. Collectively, let's turn our passion into action and ensure a safe environment for these endangered sea turtles. We must act now before it's too late. Please sign this petition to make a difference for the sea turtles of Playa Piskadó.
