Stop the Great Nicobar Project
Stop the Great Nicobar Project
The Issue
I am from India and I consider myself a global citizen too, and it is my duty to save our home planet Earth and every living being on it. We have already caused irreparable damage to many ecosystems, species, and civilizations. But this proposal on the table—the Great Nicobar Project—needs to be stopped immediately. Initiating this project would endanger the lives of the 229 people who have called this place their home for generations, as well as countless species that contribute to the ecological diversity of the Nicobar Islands.
The Great Nicobar Project aims to develop extensive infrastructure which inevitably will strip away the untouched natural habitat of the Nicobar Islands. This region does not only hold cultural significance but is also home to unique biodiversity, which is crucial for maintaining ecological balance. The project would involve deforestation, coastline development, and disturbance to the terrestrial and marine life that thrive there. This is not just an environmental concern but a humanitarian one as well. The indigenous communities, who have nurtured and preserved this land for centuries, will be forcibly displaced, losing their homeland and identity.
According to reports, the Great Nicobar Project is expected to clear more than 130 square kilometers of pristine forest land, which serves as a haven for several endangered species. Furthermore, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report raises concerns about the irreversible damage to coral reefs, mangroves, and other critical habitats essential to the island's ecosystem.
I urge the authorities to reconsider the impact of their actions and prioritize the preservation of this invaluable ecological and cultural asset. There are sustainable alternatives to development that can be pursued without compromising the integrity of our environment or the livelihoods of the local communities.
Together, we can protect the Great Nicobar Island for future generations and ensure that its legacy of natural beauty and cultural richness remains intact. Let us halt this project before it's too late. Please join me in signing this petition and make your voice heard in support of the Nicobar Islands and its people.
