Stop the government from taking us back into Europe
The Issue
Every day, I wake up committed to preserving the democratic choice the British electorate made in 2016. It was a choice about our nation’s sovereignty, identity, and the freedom to define our future on our own terms. That momentous decision, taken by millions of voters, was to leave the European Union. Now, that choice, that democratic voice, is in jeopardy. There's growing talk among certain leaders about reversing this decision and seeking to re-enter the EU, a move that dismisses the majority voice of the people.
Leaving the European Union was a pivotal move for the UK. Over 17 million voters chose a different path, envisioning a future where the UK could thrive, free from EU regulations, crafting bespoke trade deals with countries around the world. This was not just a political decision, it was a culturally defining moment for the UK.
The referendum was clear, and so was its result. Discussions of rejoining the EU ignore the binding nature of the people's vote, undermining the very democratic processes our society is built upon. The administrative back-and-forth, redrafting policies, and readjusting to EU rules would not only be cumbersome but would also distract from addressing pressing domestic concerns such as the NHS, education reforms, and housing.
Let's not forget the potential economic implications. Re-entering the EU would mean hefty membership costs, compromising our independent trade policies, and subjugating our businesses to EU laws—a devastating blow to sectors like fishing and farming that have started to thrive post-Brexit. Millions have been invested in forging new trade relationships; to reverse Brexit would put our economy into turmoil.
In light of these considerations, I urge the UK government to respect the democratic decision to leave the EU and focus on strengthening the UK’s position on the global stage as an independent nation. We must not be swayed by political manoeuvres that disregard public opinion and the foundational principles of democracy.
With your help, we can send a strong message to the government: uphold the will of the people. Sign this petition and join me in defending our democracy.
