Weld County commissioners voted unanimously to approve a huge artificial intelligence (AI) data center on the former Carestream Health site between Greeley and Windsor. Since then, residents have filled town halls and county meetings to speak out against it. The Weld County Board of County Commissioners should repeal its approval and stop this project.

The data center would be run by Global AI, a New York company, together with tech giant Nvidia and Humain, an AI company backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. Neighbors are worried about how much water and electricity a facility like this will need, and whether local families will end up paying for it through higher power bills.

Global AI says the site will use a closed-loop cooling system and will not drive up local electricity costs. But a lawsuit filed against the county this month argues the company never proved it has a reliable supply of water and power. The suit points out that the service letters from Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association (REA) and the City of Greeley come with conditions and expiration dates.

Families, farms and businesses across northern Colorado all rely on the same water and the same power grid. A project this large should not move forward while serious questions about those resources remain unanswered, and while so many residents are asking for it to stop. Organizers of a local repeal effort say they have already gathered more than 10,000 signatures.
