The Issue

The New Forest is the reason I live where I do - access to nature and opportunities for the kind of childhood I want to give my children. They are currently at school in Burley and parking in the forest car parks means that families spend time together after school, building community while children climb trees and run wild in the woods.
At the weekend these forest car parks have been gateways to our adventures, whether it’s a muddy bike ride with friends, a river paddle, a picnic, or a stomp with family. Additionally, our visits support local businesses that are integral to our community's vibrancy.

However, the recent decision by the Forestry Commission to impose parking charges in the New Forest threatens this invaluable experience. Such charges pose a significant financial burden on families, which not only discourages time in nature, but in fact makes it inaccessible for those in lower incomes. This goes against the spirit of inclusivity, which is vital for fostering a healthy, happy community.

Research has shown that exposure to nature significantly enhances mental health and overall wellbeing. In a time where community spirit and mental health are more crucial than ever, it is imperative to maintain free access to our cherished natural spaces. According to studies, even short visits to natural settings can reduce stress, enhance mood, and foster a sense of calm.

Moreover, local businesses, especially those in small communities like Burley, rely heavily on the visitors who come to the New Forest. These businesses, whether they're cafes, souvenir shops, or family-run restaurants, prosper from the influx of nature lovers. Implementing parking fees could deter visitors, resulting in a devastating economic impact on these businesses struggling to recover from recent hardships.

We propose alternative solutions to manage and maintain the New Forest without enforcing parking fees. Solutions could include increasing voluntary community donations, organising local fundraising events, or seeking sponsorship from businesses that benefit from the forest's popularity. By adopting these community-centered approaches, we can preserve the essence of the New Forest as an open and welcoming haven for all.

Join us in urging the Forestry Commission to reconsider this policy and eliminate parking charges in the New Forest. Help us protect our right to access nature freely and support our local economy. Your signature can make a difference. Please sign this petition now to keep the New Forest accessible to everyone.
