The Issue

When I first heard that almost 1 crore trees are to be cut in Nicobar, my heart sank. It felt like a sudden blow to nature, one we cannot afford. Concerned for our environment and the increasing pollutants in our air, this impending deforestation is a threat not only to the local ecosystem but to the global human health as well. Our air is already filled with pollutants, and this action could tip the scales against us.

The Great Nicobar Island, known for its stunning biodiversity and expansive lush greenery, is facing an ecological crisis—a plan which could lead to the decimation of nearly 1 crore of these life-sustaining sentinels. Trees, as we know, are the lungs of our planet; they provide clean air by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen. Cutting down such a large number only hastens ecological collapse.

Studies suggest that tropical forests not only regulate global temperatures and help combat climate change but are also home to countless species. Consequently, such action poses an existential threat not just to vegetation, but to avian and terrestrial wildlife that call these forests home, some of which may be on the brink of extinction. We must recognize the urgency and act before it's too late.

The government must seek sustainable alternatives that don't cripple our planet's health. Investing in clean renewable energy for infrastructure or prioritizing environmental impact assessments can help find a balanced solution. International bodies and environmental organizations might also be called upon to lend their voice and expertise.

We cannot let a practice driven by short-term gain eclipse the long-term impact on our environment and our lives. Trees are more than just resources; they are the lifeblood of our ecosystem.

Please sign this petition and urge policymakers to reconsider their decision and prioritize ecological preservation over short-term development goals. Together, we can save the trees that our survival depends on.
