Thank you so much for hitting 600 signatures so quickly!

We have a long way to go towards 1,000 signatures but we are off to a great start.  Please continue to share this petition with friends and family who live in Albuquerque.

There are strong forces at work against us, with nationally backed organizations like StrongTowns actively doing damage control and promoting this developer handout that has co-opted their pro-housing message.  You’ll likely see their board members [REDACTED] in your social media posts and communities to try and defend and change perception.

If you interact with this group and others who support this, notice they will come in and tell you what your community should do instead of listening to what your community actually needs.

As a reminder of the facts:

-The IDO amendments as written have zero requirements for affordable housing and no language to prevent private equity speculation on pricing.
-As written this also stops community voices and planning from having any input or notice about changes, taking away neighborhoods being able to have any input or recourse.
-The Enviromental Planning Commissioners (EPC) have already openly said they are pro-developer in recommending these amendments.
-Further protections for historic properties were removed and turned down during the EPC hearings, described by Commissioners as making it more difficult for developers.
-The claim of needing 50,000 homes in 20 years is not for the city but the entire county.  It is also based on a percentage of growth we are not experiencing, with census data showing a reduction in Albuquerque’s population.
-As studies and journalism reports on the effects of Upzoning, it is showing more and more the inequity of gentrification and price increases that force residents out, having the greatest impact on marginalized populations.
-The argument of zoning being racist is in fact based on who did it historically, like with redlining.  Reforms to zoning have made it equitable and a tool to preserve culture and history, particularly those of marginalized groups.
-As written the amendments are a handout to developers and private equity.  Why would we be giving a handout to them when they’ve created the affordability crisis here and only care about profit.  How will giving them this handout help create affordability?
-StrongTowns states this next goes to a council vote.  It does not.  It goes to a Land Use Planning and Zoning committee for a hearing & vote before being sent to full council for a vote.

We need to be informed and clear in our conversations about these amendments for Upzoning.  This is a pro-developer and private equity handout to forcefully Urbanize Albuquerque.

This is a citizen-based petition and is intended to put the power back in your hands as everyday residents to stand up and be heard.

Thank you for speaking out about this issue, as it will have long-standing impacts to our home for years to come.

Again, thank you for getting us this far and more to come as the situation continues to develop…….
