I cannot express enough my gratitude for the 386 petition signatures we have received in a week. We are on track to reaching 500 and my hope is that we can surpass 1,000 signatures.
This is a people driven movement and we need to keep sharing the petition on every piece of social media that we can. We need to come together in numbers across all paths of life in Albuquerque as a unified voice to stand up for our communities.
Developer interests are quietly co-opting and lifting up well-intended but misguided community groups like StrongTowns ABQ, who are advocating for Upzoning. They are touring every single community organization and neighborhood group they can with their progressive messaging and requests for signatures. They have friends deep within many organizations and are utilizing their connections to flood the zone with their message, which unfortunately benefits Developer interests instead of affordable housing.
Upzoning removes all protections and guardrails as well as input from community voices to allow developers and private equity to build wherever they want, whenever they want with no recourse. This could be destructive to places like Old Town and areas like the Petroglyphs. This could gentrify and destroy minority communities who’ve been here for generations and price out many.
There are zero provisions requiring affordable housing in what they are trying to pass. This is a pro-developer agenda being sold under the guise of progressive talking points.
Thank you for continuing to share and get the word out about this. I will do my best to keep you in the loop as things further develop.
