The Issue

I am a 55+ resident of Regina, Saskatchewan, and I am currently facing the heartbreaking threat of eviction from the place I have called home for many, many years. The harsh reality is that Regina Housing and Saskatchewan Housing authorities are evicting individuals like me, who have spent significant portions of our lives, sometimes decades, in these homes. This isn't just a housing issue—it's about community, stability, and dignity for senior citizens.

For years, we have contributed to our communities, and now, in our golden years, we deserve security and respect, not displacement and uncertainty. Many of us have lived in these residences for 13, 20, 29, or even 30 years and longer. These places are more than just brick and mortar; they are the foundations of our lives filled with cherished memories, friendships, and a sense of belonging.

The drastic decision to evict senior tenants disregards the contributions we have made and ignores the importance of keeping communities intact, especially for vulnerable populations.

Statistics show that providing stable housing for seniors not only improves their quality of life but also reduces costs in healthcare and welfare. According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, individuals who have secure housing experience better overall health and reduced hospital visits and stays.

It is crucial that the decision-makers at Regina Housing and Saskatchewan Housing re-evaluate this demolition policy and consider the wide-ranging impacts of their actions. Instead of evictions, there should be a focus on renovating or adapting existing properties to meet new housing standards—providing a solution that respects our rights and autonomy as long-standing residents.

We call upon Regina Housing and Saskatchewan Housing to halt evictions and prioritize home improvements while ensuring residents remain in their homes. Please sign this petition to show your support for a fair and just solution, ensuring security and dignity for seniors across Saskatchewan.
