The Issue

The renowned Grizzly bear, affectionately known as "The Boss" or Bear #122, has been a legendary figure in Banff National Park and the Bow Valley for nearly three decades. Revered for his resilience, he has survived encounters that would have been deadly for many, including being hit by a train on two separate occasions. Despite his formidable presence and size, he has never shown aggression towards humans, nor has he ever injured anyone. Instead, The Boss stands as a symbol of the wild beauty and ecological grandeur of Banff.

Throughout his impressive lifespan, The Boss has fathered more than 75% of the offspring in the region, playing a crucial role in maintaining the genetic diversity and population of his species. His contribution to the ecosystem, as well as his iconic status, make him an invaluable part of our natural heritage.

However, Parks Canada is now proposing an unjustified plan to euthanize this magnificent animal. There has been no incident or behavior reported that warrants such an extreme measure. The decision appears to be made without substantial evidence, public discussion or ecological consideration about the repercussions of losing such a vital member of the bear community.

Removing The Boss not only threatens the local grizzly population's genetic diversity but also strips Banff of a powerful symbol of wildlife resilience. The proposal lacks transparency and accountability, and it is our duty to question and challenge such actions that threaten our iconic wildlife.

We call upon Parks Canada to halt any plans to euthanize The Boss. Instead, we urge the implementation of alternative measures that can ensure public safety and the bear's wellbeing, such as increased monitoring or relocation efforts, if necessary. Our bears deserve to thrive in their natural habitat, and The Boss, more than ever, deserves our protection.

Please join us in taking a stand for The Boss. Sign this petition to stop the unnecessary euthanization of Bear #122 and protect the legacy of Banff's wildlife.
