Learning that an offender will be released after serving only half of a sentence has reopened wounds that never truly healed. It feels as though the sentence handed down by the court has been significantly reduced, leaving victims' families to question whether justice has really been served.
I understand that the prison system is under pressure, but I do not believe that victims and their families should bear the consequences of overcrowding. Early release may help address capacity issues, but it risks undermining public confidence in the justice system and causes additional distress to those already living with unimaginable loss.
