Community Safety: being undermined by the governments early prisoner release schemes- causing more localised criminal activities in your communities: burglaries, vehicle crime, knife crime, drug and alcohol related activities, violence and threatening behaviour- naming just a few coming from ex-offenders and their associates across the country and communities you reside within- just look around you local area!

We call on the government to immediately halt emergency early prisoner release schemes for ALL PRISONERS that reduce prison sentences and release offenders prematurely into local communities. Public safety, victims' rights, and confidence in the justice system must be prioritized over cutting costs or administrative convenience. Between January and March 2026, 12,977 people were released from prison while 13,193 people were returned to prison for breaching their licence conditions, up 31% from last year, new Ministry of Justice (MoJ) data showed. 

This means that for every 100 people released, 101 people were recalled to custody, creating a “recall rate” of over 100%. (another example of wasted taxpayers money)

The recent decisions to fast-track the early release of prisoners to combat prison overcrowding represent a severe compromise to public safety and an insult to victims of crime.

By allowing offenders—including violent individuals, domestic abusers, and repeat offenders—to leave confinement significantly before serving their judicially mandated terms, local communities are being placed at unnecessary risk.

We oppose this scheme for the following critical reasons:

• Threat to Community Safety: Releasing thousands of inmates prematurely strains local police forces and underfunded probation services, increasing the likelihood of reoffending and compromising local security.
• Disregard for Victims and Survivors: Victims are forced to live in fear, knowing their abusers or perpetrators are returning to society far earlier than expected, effectively overriding the sentences handed down by judges
• Erosion of Judicial Confidence: Automatically halving or reducing sentences due to "earned credits" or systemic space failures destroys public trust in the rule of law and the fairness of our legal system.

It has become a pressing concern for me personally and for countless others in our community when ex-offenders are prematurely released and integrated back into our neighbourhoods. Living next door to individuals with serious criminal records poses a constant challenge and a threat to the peace and safety we all strive for in our homes, which in turn puts pressure on a already underfunded infrastructure (police, probation, fire services etc)

Our communities, especially those like ours that are already grappling with limited resources, are often unequipped to absorb these individuals successfully. The lack of a robust support system and monitoring can lead to higher recidivism rates, perpetuating a cycle of crime and insecurity. According to a report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, more than two-thirds (68%) of released prisoners are arrested for a new crime within three years. This is an alarming statistic that we cannot ignore if we hope to create safe environments for our families.

Our Demands:
1. Immediate Cessation: An immediate and permanent halt to the early prison release policy.

2. Sentence Integrity: Legislation enforcing that all violent offenders, sex offenders, and individuals convicted of serious domestic abuse serve 100% of their judicially imposed prison time.

3. Alternative Infrastructure Solutions: The deployment of alternative measures to manage overcrowding—such as utilizing secure temporary facilities, building or renting additional prison capacity, and fast-tracking the deportation of foreign national offenders—rather than releasing prisoners back into our neighbourhoods.

Furthermore, early releases often undermine victims' sense of justice and closure. If justice systems prioritize rehabilitation, it must be balanced with the assurance that communities remain safe. Comprehensive rehabilitation programs during incarceration and better post-release supervision must be established before considering early releases.

We urge local and state authorities to re-evaluate current early release policies. Stricter criteria and enhanced support systems must be in place to ensure that individuals who are released early pose no threat to community safety. We propose a partnership between parole boards and community organizations to provide rigorous reintegration programs, combining skills training, counselling, and continuous monitoring.

Our children deserve to play outside without fear; our elders deserve to stroll around the neighbourhood with peace of mind. Let's come together to advocate for a judicial process that respects the safety of community life and upholds our values of security and well-being.
