STOP DUKE ENERGY'S WNC PROJECT
Sep 1, 2015
Fight the proposal To the editor: It sounds as if county commissioners have caved in to Duke Energy's plan to run high electrical transmission lines through the county. One commissioner even stated that they have no bullets to shoot down the proposal. Nothing could be further from the truth: 1. Duke states that it is needed for future projected growth. We anticipate the growth, but it has not been shown that the generating capacity could not be increased at the Lake Julian plant. 2. Duke states that undergrounding the lines is not feasible. Where's the proof? It has been done in other areas. Why not here? Check the Internet for proof. Have we forgotten that Duke assured everyone that coal ash storage was completely safe? We got pollution of a major river and contaminated underground water tables. Duke cannot be trusted. Who looks out for county residents who will face environmental and aesthetic damage, lowered property values and magnetic field exposure with the Duke plan? Commissioners need to fight the Duke proposal through legislation and in the courts. If they do not, installation of the massive power towers will be a monument to their failure to act to protect our cherished way of life. Steve Franks Hendersonville
