Stop the dog and cat meat industry
The issue
Imagine waking up one day to find that your beloved pet has been taken away, never to return. For me, and millions of pet owners around the world, our dogs and cats are not just animals; they are family members. The practice of consuming dog and cat meat is not just a distant problem, it might also hit close to home.
In many parts of the world, thousands upon thousands of dogs and cats are stolen from households each year to be sold into the meat trade. This horrendous industry isn't just about the consumption of these animals, but about the cruel methods in which they are killed. Evidence shows that animals in this trade are often subjected to extreme neglect and abuse before being slaughtered. According to Humane Society International, it is estimated that 30 million dogs are killed annually for meat across Asia.
Apart from the inherent cruelty, there are significant health risks associated with consuming dog and cat meat. The spread of diseases such as rabies and other zoonotic diseases is a real threat, endangering not only the lives of animals but humans as well. The World Health Organization has classified this practice as a public health risk, urging governments to take action.
What can we do? We need to push for stronger legislation to outlaw the dog and cat meat industry globally. It’s imperative to support initiatives that rescue and rehabilitate stolen pets, raise awareness about the emotional value of pets, and promote plant-based or humane alternatives for consumption. Furthermore, governments need to enforce stricter penalties on those engaged in this trade and provide support for the transition of workers to safe and humane vocations.
