Hello and thank you for supporting our petition opposing the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO)'s 9-Step implementation process for a proposed Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for nuclear fuel waste in Northwestern Ontario. This petition is still ongoing and has gathered over 11,000 signatures online from points all over the world, and even more via paper copies near the proposed repository site.
New Petition to the Ontario Legislature
If you are an Ontario resident, you may be interested in a new petition which will be presented at the Ontario Legislature early in 2023 and is currently active, collecting signatures. It has been launched by our allied organization We the Nuclear Free North, and asks that Ontario adopt the Proximity Principle with respect to the management of radioactive wastes, and to direct Ontario Power Generation to further its development of robust extended storage systems at or near the point of generation.
The Proximity Principle, embodied in much European legislation, dictates that wastes be managed close to their points of production. If adopted, the Proximity Principle would dictate that nuclear waste in southern Ontario be managed near the nuclear power reactors where it was produced.
This Provincial petition, which already has over 800 signatures, will be presented to the Ontario Legislature early in 2023.
But petitions to the Ontario Legislature cannot gather signatures online - only paper copies are allowed.
Signatures from Ontarians of all ages are welcomed. The Ontario petition will be available at We the Nuclear Free North's and allied organizations' events until the end of February, 2023. If you are unable to visit these events or wish to help us collect signatures, please download the Provincial Petition against Nuclear Waste in Northwestern Ontario, collect signatures, and mail the petition by Feb. 28, 2022 to:
We the Nuclear Free North

Note that emailed scans of petitions cannot be accepted.
Thank you for your ongoing help. Through these petitions and many other means, Environment North and We the Nuclear Free North are making great strides in opposing the burial and abandonment of nuclear fuel waste in Northwestern Ontario.
