Stop the dismantling of Tasmania’s defence and cadet units

Stop the dismantling of Tasmania’s defence and cadet units
The issue
The Albanese Government's decision to dispose of 15 out of the 16 Defence sites in Tasmania poses a grave threat to the state's future defence capabilities. This is not only about the loss of facilities but a drastic blow to the training for both the Reserve units and cadet programs that play a pivotal role in our national security network. Tasmania, with its unique geostrategic location, is crucial for overseeing the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. This decision to eliminate Defence facilities here undermines our ability to address emerging strategic challenges in these sensitive areas.
The lack of sufficient training grounds means Reserve units will struggle to complete even basic drills, compromising their readiness for potential threats. Moreover, without qualifying shoot locations, the preparedness of our forces could diminish significantly, leaving Tasmania vulnerable. Cadet units, which serve as essential breeding grounds for future Defence personnel, will be left without the necessary infrastructure to continue their vital developmental work.
No other region in Australia is facing such an erosion of Defence capabilities. With these sites up for sale, Tasmania risks becoming the only area in the nation without any Defence infrastructure, a position that is untenably dangerous given our geopolitical landscape.
While the decision is perhaps seen as a cost-cutting measure, the long-term repercussions on national security far outweigh any immediate financial benefits. We need proactive measures to preserve these Defence locations and ensure they continue to serve their purpose in safeguarding the region and training our forces.
Join us in calling on the Albanese Government to halt the sale of these vital Defence sites immediately. By signing this petition, you're advocating for the security and preparedness of Tasmania and the nation. Let's stand together to protect our future and keep Tasmania ready to meet the defence challenges of tomorrow. Sign now, before it’s too late.
