First and foremost, thank you to everyone who came out to delegate, and show support for Huron Natural Area at last night’s Planning Committee meeting.

If you weren't able to attend or tune-in last night, you can find a recording of the meeting here. Our team's delegations begin around 1:23.

We didn’t expect the meeting to run as long as it did, and your patience, presence, and continued support, especially from those who brought children, did not go unnoticed. You filled the chambers and made it clear: our community cares deeply about how we grow and what we protect.

It’s not over yet. The development proposal will go to City Council for final consideration on November 10th, and we’ll need your voices again soon.

Until then, we will continue posting updates to our petition, and updating our LinkTree. You can also stay connected with us on Instagram, or on Facebook.

An overview of last night's meeting:

  • The proposed development, located in Ward 5, would see nearly 40 acres of land bordering Huron Natural Area transformed into a 10-unit industrial complex.
  • A total of 19 delegates spoke up against the proposed development.
  • Despite our delegation highlighting serious misrepresentations and inconsistencies in the Environmental Impact Study (EIS), our concerns were dismissed, and city staff refused to investigate further.
  • When city staff was asked about the failure to meet Indigenous consultation standards, staff admitted they simply “agreed to disagree.”
  • All City Councillors, except for Ward 9 Councillor Debbie Chapman, voted to support the proposed development at 1700 Strasburg Road.
  • The project will now move forward to City Council on November 10th for final approval, where our team plans to delegate again. Please stay posted for further news and details on the next delegation meeting.

Thank you again for your dedication, your energy, and your love for Huron Natural Area. Together, we’ll keep standing up for the land, the wildlife, and the community that depend on it.

With gratitude,
The Protect Huron Natural Area Team
