Stop the detention, abuse, and forced return of Eritrean refugees
The Issue
As an Eritrean, witnessing the plight of my fellow countrymen and women facing detention, abuse, and possible forced return in Egypt is unbearable. It is heart-wrenching to see individuals who have fled persecution and hardship seeking safety, only to encounter further cruelty and uncertainty. These individuals, like all refugees, are entitled to dignity, compassion, and the opportunity to live without fear.
The situation for Eritrean refugees in Egypt is dire. According to reports from human rights organizations, many refugees and asylum seekers find themselves imprisoned in harsh conditions. These individuals, already traumatized by their journey, are subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment that further compounds their suffering. Alarmingly, they face the constant threat of being forcibly returned to Eritrea, a country known for human rights violations and oppressive practices, disregarding international principles of non-refoulement.
Detaining and mistreating vulnerable individuals seeking asylum violates numerous international laws and conventions, including the 1951 Refugee Convention which Egypt is a signatory to. The Egyptian government has the responsibility to ensure that those seeking refuge are protected and treated with humanity and fairness. Releasing the detained refugees and providing them with access to legal aid, fair asylum procedures, and humane living conditions is not only a moral obligation but a legal one.
We call upon the Egyptian government to immediately halt the detention and abuse of Eritrean refugees and ensure their protection under international law. We urge the United Nations, the African Union, and other international bodies to pressure the Egyptian authorities to uphold the rights of refugees and adhere to their commitments to human rights standards.
This petition demands urgent action to save lives and restore hope to Eritrean refugees in Egypt. Together, let us be a voice for the voiceless and demand justice and dignity for those who have fled unimaginable circumstances. Stand with us in advocating for their rights. Please sign this petition to help bring change and ensure Eritrean refugees receive the protection and compassion they deserve.
