The Issue

The conservation area of land located off Farley Lane at Roby Mill (behind St. Josephs Seminary) is home to a diverse amount of wildlife and flora/fauna which creates a natural habitat and environment for our British species.

St. Joseph's Catholic Seminary in Upholland is an important local landmark. The building itself is an architectural masterpiece and the grounds are spectacular. It was a tragedy when the site was closed to the public in 1999 and now it has been announced by the Victorian Society as one of the top 10 most 'at risk' buildings in England and Wales

Unfortunately this beautiful conservation area will soon be destroyed along with St. Joseph's Seminary in order to build a golf course and club, apartments and car park.

Conservation areas are crucial for preserving biodiversity, protecting natural habitats, and maintaining environmental balance. These lands are not just statistics or distant areas; they represent the vibrant ecosystems that provide refuge for wildlife and are a vital part of our community’s natural heritage. It is distressing to witness destructive activities, such as construction, threatening these irreplaceable sanctuaries.

Building in these precious areas devastates habitats, displaces wildlife, and disrupts the ecological balance, leading to potentially irreversible damage. Construction projects must be re-evaluated with an eye towards sustainability and long-term ecological health. We acknowledge the need for development, but it should not come at the expense of our planet’s essential natural resources.

To counter these threats, policy makers must strengthen regulations protecting conservation areas. This includes zoning laws that strictly prohibit construction projects within these zones and enforcing penalties for violations. Additionally, alternative projects and sites, which do not compromise ecological integrity, should be prioritised.

By defending these natural sanctuaries, we are preserving our environment for future generations. It is a collective responsibility to maintain the balance between development and conservation. I urge you to recognize the importance of these areas and to take decisive action to halt construction.

Please sign this petition to protect our conservation areas and demand sustainable development practices. Together, we can ensure the preservation of these vital ecosystems for the enjoyment and benefit of generations to come.

If nothing is done the developers will continue to destroy this beautiful area and build 92 apartments including car park. This will destroy the habitats for many animals and cause also increase traffic in the area in addition to further pressure on the infrastructure.

We need to act now before this beauty spot is levelled into a carpark and becomes a distant memory of what used to be the seminary.
