We have previously shared the good news of the announcement by the government representative that the Old Nurses' Quarters will NOT be demolished to make way for a pond for flood mitigation, but will be repurposed to house the General Hospital's patients' families from out of town.
However, since January 2025, various parties have been working on plans to demolish the Old Nurses Quarters and replace it with a new building. They wrongly suggest that the old building is dilapidated. The Sarawak Museum's detailed study in October 2024 established that the building is sound and robust.
Those advocating for demolition estimate that renovation will cost the same as a new building which is incorrect. Renovation will cost about RM2 million including new bathrooms throughout and a new building will be 4 or 5 times that, and will take many years to complete.
Some parties also wrongly believe that the site will always flood. Making the land flood proof is very simple and costs less than RM100,000.
Sarawak Heritage Soceity will be meeting with the government and other stakeholders in two weeks to discuss the latest situation.
So the heritage building is still threatened. Please get other people to sign this petition, and to do so today. The more public support for the renovation, the stronger our voice.
