The Issue

The Museum at Keewaydin has long been the keeper of Benton County's history, safeguarding the cherished memories and artifacts that narrate our shared past. This museum is more than just a building; it is a repository of our collective heritage, the guardian of stories that bind us as a community.

The City of Kennewick is currently exploring options for a new City Hall, and one of the plans presented by their architectural firm involves the demolition of our museum building. The architect's plan suggests replacing our nearly 5,000-square-feet of exhibition space—with a mere 500 square feet of space inside a new city hall. This represents a 90% reduction in our ability to display our collections, such as our one-of-a-kind petrified wood floor, military exhibits, and the vast projectile point collection.

The Museum at Keewaydin represents the heart of our community, where generations come to learn, reflect, and connect with their roots. Removing it not only risks losing irreplaceable historical artifacts but also diminishes our community's identity and pride. Instead of demolishing this vital landmark, we urge the City of Kennewick to consider one of the alternative designs.

Community surveys show that a significant portion of local residents value cultural and historical sites. As guardians of this legacy, it is our duty to ensure that future generations can marvel at their heritage.

Join us in advocating for the preservation of the Museum at Keewaydin. Let's protect our past to enrich our future. Please sign this petition to prevent the potential loss of Benton County history and urge leaders to reconsider the demolition plan in favor of a more balanced solution that honors our community's cultural roots.
