Stop the demolition of St Lawrence College in Ramsgate

Stop the demolition of St Lawrence College in Ramsgate
The Issue
St Lawrence College has been a cherished institution in Thanet since 1879, forming an integral part of our community. Its historic grounds and iconic buildings hold a special place in the hearts of many who have walked its halls, studied in its classrooms, and played on its fields. This venerable school's architecture and facilities, including the impressive £6 million science, art, and design technology centre, the expansive sports pitches, and the beloved theatre, contribute significantly to the local landscape and community life.
An article stated that "The St Lawrence College site has been earmarked for development." With a listed building: the impressive chapel and all of the other fantastic facilities, we cannot allow this site to be developed, it must be preserved and used by the community, There are many dance schools, acting schools and local businesses that use its facilities and this would be a huge loss to the community that is already struggling. These facilities could be used by sports team, youth groups, drama and arts groups or even universities and it would be a travesty for these to be wasted, especially in Ramsgate, where there are no other facilities as impressive or large as St Lawrence College.
Furthermore, the emotional ties that so many of us have to this school—the friendships formed, the lessons learned, and memories cherished—are not something that can be easily replaced or overshadowed by new buildings. The destruction of these structures will erase a piece of local history that has contributed to our identity and culture for generations.
Instead of erasing this beloved institution from the landscape, let us explore other alternatives that can coexist with community development. Saving St Lawrence College is not just about preventing demolition; it's about safeguarding our heritage and investing in a future where the community's past can continue to inspire future generations.
Join us in urging local authorities to reconsider these plans and seek solutions that respect St Lawrence College's historical significance and its potential as a community asset. Please sign this petition to help protect the essence of our community.
