The Issue

I am a resident of Norwalk, and like many families in this community, I deeply care about the facilities at Hermosillo Park. Our neighborhood is a low-income area, classified as high-risk for youth, which makes access to safe recreational spaces critical. Hermosillo Park has been a cornerstone for our community's children and teenagers, offering them a space to enjoy basketball, racquetball, and handball on well-maintained courts. It's where friendships are forged, skills are honed, and young people find a healthy outlet for their energy. It’s more than just a park to us; it’s a safe haven.

Recently, changes have been proposed that put our park's amenities at risk. The city of Norwalk plans to demolish the basketball court, racquetball courts, and kids’ pool, replacing them with two soccer fields. While soccer is a beloved sport, these new facilities are likely to be rented out, limiting access for local children. For many kids living in our neighborhood, these spaces are the only places they can safely play and be active.

Statistics nationwide show that recreational facilities reduce crime rates by giving youth productive things to focus on, and Hermosillo Park is no exception. Eliminating these amenities could inadvertently push children towards potential negative influences due to fewer places to engage positively. Moreover, not all children enjoy or want to play soccer, and it's crucial that they have access to a variety of sports and activities, allowing them to discover and nurture their interests.

We are calling on the city of Norwalk to reconsider its plans and find a solution that benefits our entire community. Instead of displacement, let's look at improvement. We can maintain existing facilities while also introducing new ones that cater to everyone's interests. This is about giving our children an equal opportunity to explore their passions and stay active in a constructive environment.

We urge all residents of Norwalk and supporters of community spaces to join us in this cause. Let us preserve Hermosillo Park’s identity as a multi-sport and community-centered space. Please sign this petition to keep Hermosillo Park accessible and inclusive for all our children.
