Stop the demolition of cat shelters in Harrison County

The Issue

Imagine a place where countless lives depend on human kindness, where the vulnerable are cared for by dedicated individuals who refuse to turn a blind eye. This is the reality at the Harrison County Fairgrounds in Ohio. For years, a community of cats has made these buildings their home, nurtured by the tireless efforts of our local Humane Society through the trap-neuter-return (TNR) method, and fed daily by compassionate citizens like my dear friend.

The fairgrounds have become a sanctuary—a safe haven where each cat is not just another stray but a cherished life deserving of care. These volunteers, including my friend, have devoted time, money, and love to ensure these felines thrive, checking on them every day and providing food and water. This work has even extended to maintaining the structures that shelter the cats, a testament to their commitment.

The Harrison County Fair Board, however, plans to demolish these buildings, ignoring the extended hand of charity and compassion shown by our community. Their decision threatens to displace these cats without any viable solution, as rehoming is not an option. Countless cats risk being left homeless, vulnerable, and without the care they desperately need.

Instead of tearing down a safe refuge, we urge the Fair Board to install cameras on the grounds to deter abandonment and hold those accountable who neglect their responsibility toward their pets. Establishing a system to charge individuals responsible for abandonment is a more humane, proactive approach that maintains the safety of our community's animals.

Our goal is clear: to protect these cats from unnecessary harm and ensure they continue to receive the care and shelter they have always known. The love and trust between this community and the cats are not something that should be broken.

Stand with us, and let's preserve the home these cats have known for years. Sign this petition to urge the Harrison County Fair Board to stop the demolition of these vital buildings and instead seek solutions that preserve the lives and well-being of our feline friends. Your signature can make a difference for these animals who are part of our community family.
