The Blackburn Point Swing Bridge holds a special place in the hearts of countless residents in our Sarasota County community. As one of the last remaining swing bridges in Florida, it stands as a tangible link to our past, from the earliest days of our county’s history. This 100-year-old architectural gem, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, not only showcases the engineering marvels of its time but also symbolizes the perseverance and progress of generations past. 

In recent discussions, county traffic engineers have proposed demolishing this beloved structure to replace it with a much larger bridge that could require upgraded and widened roadways. It would provide greater traffic access to quiet Casey Key.

Yet the Blackburn Point Swing Bridge can be restored for a fraction of the cost of building a new one, thereby preserving its historical significance while serving its functional purpose. 

We urge the Sarasota County Board of Commissioners to reject plans for demolition when county staff bring the proposal forward. Instead, invest in the restoration and rehabilitation of this historic bridge.
