Stop the Demolition of Annie Coleman Housing Project

Stop the Demolition of Annie Coleman Housing Project

The Issue

I am a resident of Liberty City, and for many years, the Annie Coleman Housing Project has been home to my family and friends. This community is not just a collection of buildings; it's a place where memories were made, children grew up, and lives were lived. The proposed demolition by Miami-Dade County's Public Housing and Community Development threatens to erase this history.

The Annie Coleman projects are more than just homes; they are an integral part of our community fabric. They have provided affordable housing options for countless families over the years in an area where such options are increasingly scarce. According to data from the U.S Census Bureau (2019), 26% of households in Miami-Dade County spend more than half their income on rent.

Tearing down these homes without providing adequate alternatives would displace vulnerable residents, exacerbating homelessness and housing insecurity issues already prevalent in our region. The National Low Income Housing Coalition reports that Florida has one of the highest rates of housing cost burden for renters in America.

We urge Miami-Dade County's Public Housing and Community Development to reconsider this demolition. We ask them to engage with residents like us who call this place home before making any irreversible decisions that could negatively impact our lives.

Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving communities like ours and standing against displacement.
