For almost a year, we have tried convincing Sound Transit to consider a different roadway design for Lake Forest Park: Transit Q-pass lanes and signalized lights, a more environmentally sensitive, community-friendly, and transit-friendly design than a dedicated bus lane through the heart of our community.
Why do we oppose a dedicated eastbound bus lane in Lake Forest Park?
Because it requires:
- The loss of as many as 400 trees effectively deforesting Bothell Way in Lake Forest Park.
- The construction of a near 4,000 linear foot concrete, heat and noise-generating retaining wall.
- One hundred ten property owners give up much of their property to accommodate the additional lane.
- The expenditure of more than 50% of the total cost of construction, construction management, property acquisition, and permitting costs for the entire Stride-3 project
Why does Sound Transit want to build a dedicated bus lane in Lake Forest Park?
Because, they say, it will save the bus rider 2.3 minutes during the weekday afternoon rush hour commute through Lake Forest Park, just 15% of the 16 minutes Stride 3 will save bus transit riders who ride the entire 8 miles.
Sound Transit knows there is a better way:
The design they use on 145th Street from the South Shoreline Light Rail station to the intersection of 145the and Bothell Way: Transit Q-pass lanes and signalized lights. There will be no long dedicated bus lanes there, yet it alone saves 60% or more of the bus commute time saved over the 8 miles of Stride-3.
We've learned one important thing after a year of working on this. Even though we routinely turn out 500 or more residents in opposition to this plan, it will take the support of groups and people like you to convince Sound Transit to consider a simple, effective, lower-cost alternate that benefits our environment and still provides significant value to transit riders. We have received formal letters of endorsement from many local groups. Those include, among others, TreePAC, which sent us this endorsement:
"TreePAC endorses CORE's efforts to convince Sound Transit to change its roadway design to a more community and environmentally sensitive, transit-friendly design using Transit Q-pass lanes and signalized lights instead of BAT (Business And Transit) dedicated bus lanes."
