Stop the data centre construction in Wonder Valley

Stop the data centre construction in Wonder Valley
The Issue
Living in Grande Prairie, Alberta, I've grown increasingly concerned about the rapid changes affecting our community. Among these changes is the proposal to build a new data centre in Wonder Valley. This development, while potentially beneficial for technological advancement, poses significant environmental and social risks that cannot be ignored.
Firstly, the proposed data centre is likely to strain our already limited water resources. Data centres require vast amounts of water for cooling, and given the current state of our local water systems, this could lead to severe shortages for residents and local agriculture, which relies heavily on these resources.
Moreover, the electrical demands of such a facility could potentially overburden our current infrastructure. The energy consumption of data centres is notoriously high, and this could lead to increased energy costs or even power shortfalls for Grande Prairie and surrounding areas.
Additionally, there's the broader concern of increased AI usage and its implications. While technological progress is essential, it comes with ethical and privacy issues that we must address head-on. Technology should serve our community's needs and values, not dictate them.
The decision to construct this data centre seems to have been made without adequate consultation with residents, and many of us are uneasy about its potential impacts. We believe that our voices should be heard in decisions that alter our community landscape and environment.
I urge local leaders and stakeholders to reconsider this project.
Please join me in opposing the data centre development in Wonder Valley by signing this petition.
