A Miami-based developer called Hut 8 wants to build a 500-megawatt data center on 720 acres of farmland outside Latham, Illinois.

To avoid county oversight, it is working to annex the land into a small village, bypassing the Logan County Board entirely.

The county tried to pause the project while it studied the issue, but that moratorium was ruled invalid on a technicality, and protective regulations were never passed.

Hut 8 claims the project will bring $65 million in annual tax revenue and 200 full-time jobs. Logan County's own supervisor of assessments says the real tax figure may be closer to $16 million, and local research suggests only around 20 employees would be on site at a time.

Residents deserve a fair process, not a workaround.
