The Issue

I live close to the proposed data center site at Rt62 and Broadway in Nimishillen Township. This development is not just about erecting a building; it’s about how it will affect the lives of every resident in our community, including mine. Imagine the constant noise from construction and operation affecting our peaceful neighborhood, and the heavy traffic making daily commutes a nightmare.

One of the most significant concerns is the potential health risks associated with data centers. They consume vast amounts of energy, often powered by sources that can pollute the air we breathe. Studies have shown that increased air pollution correlates with higher rates of respiratory diseases and other health issues. Our community deserves clean air and a healthy environment, not one tainted by industrial pollutants.

Additionally, data centers require enormous quantities of water for cooling systems, potentially leading to water shortages. Nimishillen Township’s natural resources should be preserved for the residents and future generations, not depleted for the sake of industrial development.

Moreover, property values could decline due to this installation. The noise, pollution, and congestion negatively impact the perception of our neighborhood, making it less appealing to potential homeowners. This is not the legacy we want to leave for our children.

The community has always valued its green spaces and tranquility. There is room for sustainable development that respects both these values and the needs of residents. Renewable energy and eco-friendly architecture can create job opportunities without compromising the environment or our health. We urge the town planners and decision-makers to explore alternative sites or to reconsider the project plan to incorporate sustainable practices.

Sign this petition to stand against the construction of the data center at Rt62 and Broadway. Let’s protect our health, environment, and community for ourselves and future generations.

Thank you to everyone who has signed this petition and shared your concerns about the proposed data center at Rt 62 and Broadway. I want to be transparent with residents about the Township's role in this matter. The Nimishillen Township Trustees had no prior knowledge of this proposed development. Additionally, the Township has no legal authority or say in this matter, as the land in question was annexed by the City of Canton a few years ago. Because the property now falls under Canton's jurisdiction, decisions regarding this development — including zoning, permitting, and approval — are made by the City of Canton, not by the Township Trustees. I'd encourage residents who want to raise concerns or seek more information to direct their questions to the appropriate City of Canton officials and departments. At our last meeting, our attorney recommended that residents collectively retain a single law firm to represent their interests in this matter. This approach can help manage costs, present a unified message, and pursue compensation if property values are affected. Specific concerns to raise with legal counsel include protecting water wells and seeking compensation for any loss in neighborhood quality. Residents should make sure to choose a firm with relevant competency in this type of matter. Our next community meeting will be held one week from today at 7:00 PM at the Maple Grove Fire Department. Please note that seating is very limited, so plan to arrive early if you'd like to attend. I understand this is a significant concern for our community, and I want residents to know where the actual decision-making authority lies so your voices can reach the right people. — Mark Thomas, Nimishillen Township Trustee
