The Issue

Coffeyville, Kansas, a town known for its rich history and vibrant community, now faces an imminent threat to its environment and quality of life due to the proposal of new data centers. These centers, while seemingly beneficial for economic growth, bring about significant challenges that could irreversibly alter the character of our beloved town.

Silicon Valley is caught in a reckless, hyper-accelerated "gold rush" to build Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). They are treating rural communities like Coffeyville, Kansas, as short-term extraction sites. Big Tech is trying to force a corporate agenda down our throats—demanding our cheap land, local power grid, and massive amounts of water—while leaving our community to carry the long-term risks.

This is a massive speculative bubble. Prominent tech policy watchdogs, including the AI Now Institute, have issued urgent warnings that this rapid expansion of hyperscale data centers acts as corporate extractivism. Within 5 to 10 years, as AI models shift toward at-home, localized AI architectures and quantum computing takes over, these centralized mega-facilities will become completely obsolete. When this bubble inevitably bursts, Big Tech will pack up and abandon these stranded assets. Coffeyville will be left with depleted natural resources, a degraded utility grid, and the massive financial burden of maintaining this ruined public infrastructure will shift directly onto local taxpayers.

Historically, the Fourth Amendment protected us by requiring a judge to sign a warrant before law enforcement or third parties could track our physical movements. Today, private mass surveillance systems—like Flock Safety’s automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras—are actively bypassing the constitution. These private networks log our movements, build "vehicle fingerprints," and funnel that data directly to massive data brokers. This is where the AI data centers come in. These tech conglomerates use AI models running on hundreds of billions of parameters (weights) to combine private camera tracking with our social media profiles, consumer habits, and daily schedules. An ordinary weekend trip to Taco Bell isn’t a matter of national security, but to an unmonitored AI algorithm, it is a data point to be aggregated, modeled, and monetized. The scale of this computing is unprecedented, processing more citizen data points in under 24 hours than a human being could process in an entire lifespan. We refuse to let our public utilities and hard-earned tax dollars subsidize a speculative tech bubble that exploits our private lives while draining our town dry.
