The Issue

The proposed data center at the Centre Foundry lot in Warwood, West Virginia, has raised significant concerns among local residents and environmental experts. This construction project, slated to break ground soon, is not just a simple development; it represents a potential threat to our community’s environment, health, and quality of life.

Firstly, the construction and operation of data centers are known to consume vast amounts of energy and water. Reports have shown that data centers can use electricity equivalent to the power consumption of small cities and require millions of gallons of water annually for cooling purposes. In a community like Warwood, these demands could strain our local resources, leading to increased energy costs and potential water scarcity issues for residents.

Moreover, the increase in traffic and noise pollution during the construction phase and thereafter would disrupt the tranquility and safety of our neighborhood. Heavy machinery and the constant comings and goings of construction vehicles pose risks to pedestrians, particularly children and the elderly, who frequent the area.

Additionally, there are serious concerns regarding the environmental impact. The Centre Foundry site is close to residential areas and local ecosystems that could be adversely affected by pollution and habitat disruption. The loss of green space not only impacts local wildlife but also contributes to the urban heat island effect, which could exacerbate climate change issues already being felt in West Virginia.

Our community values its small-town character and environmental integrity. Building a data center here contradicts these values and could set a precedent for future industrial developments that may encroach on our community’s well-being.

We urge local government officials and planning authorities to reconsider the location of this data center. Alternative sites, perhaps in less environmentally sensitive areas, should be explored that will not disrupt the lives of Warwood residents nor jeopardize our environment.

Please sign this petition to demand a halt to the data center project at the Centre Foundry lot. Together, we can ensure the preservation of our community’s character and the well-being of our environment for future generations.
