The Issue

Blackpool Council has just started work on the £57 million Anchorsholme Coast Protection Scheme. In spring 2027 they plan to install 17 massive rock groynes along our famous beach (starting with 5 at Anchorsholme).

The RNLI has lodged a formal 32-page objection, warning that these rock structures will create serious safety hazards for holidaymakers, children, swimmers, and lifeboat crews. They say rescuing people from the groynes “presents considerable challenges” and puts both the public and RNLI teams at risk.

We support protecting homes from flooding and erosion — but not at the cost of public safety. Timber groynes failed before. Why repeat the mistake with something even more dangerous?
