The Issue

In 2015, a Bridger Pipeline rupture spilled more than 50,000 gallons of crude oil into the Yellowstone River — contaminating the drinking water of an entire Montana city. Just seven years later, the same company spilled 45,000 gallons of diesel in Wyoming. Now, the Trump administration has approved a permit for Bridger Pipeline to build a brand new 650-mile oil pipeline that would cross some of America's most iconic and vital waterways, including the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers.

This pipeline — already being called "Keystone Light" — would carry up to 550,000 barrels of oil a day from Canada through Montana and Wyoming. That's an enormous amount of oil moving through the heart of the American West, operated by a company that has already proven it cannot prevent catastrophic spills.

Bridger Pipeline and its parent company have paid $12.5 million to settle federal lawsuits over past spills. No settlement can restore a river. No fine can undo contaminated drinking water. The communities that live along these waterways — farmers, ranchers, and small towns — deserve better than a promise that this time will be different.

We are calling on federal and state regulators to block or significantly delay further approvals for the Bridger Pipeline Expansion until an independent, thorough environmental review is completed — one that fully accounts for this company's spill history and the risks posed to rivers and drinking water supplies across Montana and Wyoming.

Our water is not worth the risk.
