Stop the Cutting of Art Programs in the Methuen School District

Stop the Cutting of Art Programs in the Methuen School District
The Issue
The Fine Arts are an integral part of a well-rounded education. The current budget proposed by the Methuen School Committee will cut both the Fine Arts Director position, Theater teacher position, and all theater classes at MHS.
Social emotional learning has pushed by Central Admin over the past few years, with the connections program, the bridge program, and extensive access to counseling, and yet the fine arts are overlooked as a phenomenal resource for this learning. Without it, a multitude of students will suffer. The Fine Arts Department plays an integral role in the mental health of every student.
The acting and theater classes at MHS play an important role in supporting Stage Door 22, the schools Drama Club, which contains roughly 80 students from all different backgrounds. Without the theater teacher position, the Stage Door 22 program will fall apart.
Removing the Fine Arts Director will not only put additional pressure on teachers, the back bone of education, but also other administrators who will have to pick up more responsibilities on top of their already difficult jobs.
Art is expression, taking away art takes away our voices.
