I am immensely grateful and filled with hope as I write to share our recent accomplishment - together, we've surpassed 266 signatures on our petition. This milestone isn't merely a number; it's evidence of our shared conviction in the significance of safeguarding our children's education quality in Scotland.

The Importance of Sharing

Now, I urge you all to take a moment to share this petition on Facebook, Twitter/X, and all other social media platforms you utilise. By doing so, you wield the power to influence government decisions affecting our children's futures. After signing, sharing this cause is the most impactful action you can undertake. It's through your networks that we can engage with other parents, educators, and concerned individuals who believe, as we do, that our children's education is paramount.

A Legacy of Education

Scotland boasts a proud history of producing some of the world's most influential thinkers, inventors, and leaders. From the pioneering medical discoveries of Alexander Fleming, who presented the world with penicillin, to the groundbreaking physics of James Clerk Maxwell, and the innovative engineering of John Logie Baird, inventor of the television. These luminaries, and others like them, were once young learners within Scotland's education system, their potential nurtured by dedicated teachers.

By permitting cuts to primary and secondary education, we risk severing this enduring legacy. We cannot allow short-term fiscal strategies to jeopardise the long-term future of our nation's most significant asset: our children. They deserve an education system that is cherished, not considered a line item for budget reductions.

Your Role in Shaping the Future

Each share, each conversation about this petition, and each new signature brings us closer to preserving Scotland's rich educational heritage. You hold the keys—the power—to ensure our government recognises the invaluable investment that is our children's education.

Let's unite in this cause and amplify our voices more broadly and loudly than ever before. By reaching our next milestone of 500 signatures, we can demonstrate a formidable collective will that cannot be ignored. Your support, your voice, and your action can shape the future, ensuring Scotland continues to educate bright minds that change the world.

Thank you once more for your steadfast support. Let's continue this journey together, for our children, for our teachers, and for the future of Scotland.

With sincere appreciation,

Michael Sherriff

Scottish Figures and Their Contributions:

Alexander Fleming: Born in 1881 in Lochfield, near Darvel in Ayrshire, Fleming's formative years were spent in the rural landscapes of Scotland before he moved to London, where he attended the Regent Street Polytechnic (now known as the University of Westminster). His journey from a modest Scottish farm to being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 for his discovery of penicillin exemplifies the extraordinary potential our education system holds in nurturing talents that can change the world. Fleming’s educational trajectory from a rural school to international acclaim underscores the pivotal role education plays in unlocking such potential.

John Logie Baird: Baird, born in 1888 in Helensburgh, embodies the innovative spirit fostered by Scottish education. He was educated at Larchfield Academy (now integrated into Lomond School) before pursuing further studies at the Royal Technical College in Glasgow (presently the University of Strathclyde). Baird's later invention of the world's first operational television system is a testament to the heights that individuals educated in Scotland can reach. His transition from local education to becoming the inventor of the television demonstrates how a solid educational foundation can lead to remarkable accomplishments.

These narratives of Fleming and Baird, both of whom were born and educated in Scotland, shine a light on the significant impact that a comprehensive educational system can achieve. As we face the prospect of eroding this legacy with cuts to our educational budget, it is crucial to recall the levels of innovation and discovery attained by our predecessors. Their contributions serve as a compelling appeal for us to safeguard and enhance our education system, ensuring that the coming generations have the chance to make as significant a mark on the world as did Fleming and Baird.

We must not let budget cuts overshadow the bright prospects of Scottish education. Instead, let us unite, share this petition, and make certain our collective voice is heard unequivocally: Scotland’s education deserves protection, for the benefit of our children and the future leaders among them.
