The issue

I have always loved horses for their grace, strength, and majestic presence. Growing up in Australia, my admiration was particularly drawn to the brumbies—these stunning wild horses that have roamed our national parks for over a century. Seeing them in the wild evokes a sense of freedom and connection to our rich cultural heritage. However, the recent plans to cull thousands of these creatures in areas like the Kosciuszko National Park feel absolutely barbaric and senseless to me.

Brumbies are part of Australia's history and identity. These wild horses have been romanticised in poetry and film and have become iconic symbols of the Australian wilderness. The proposed culling plans, which intend to drastically reduce their numbers, ignore the significant place brumbies hold in our culture and threaten to erase a vital part of our history.

Proponents of the cull argue that brumbies pose a threat to the environment, causing erosion and damaging native flora. While it is essential to protect our natural parks, there are more humane and effective solutions such as fertility control and relocation. Evidence from programs in the United States, where similar strategies have been implemented successfully, demonstrate that these methods can manage populations without resorting to killing the animals.

The beauty of the Australian landscape is intrinsically linked with the presence of these wild horses. Culling not only disrupts the ecosystem but also devastates the hearts of those who have cherished these animals for generations.

I urge policymakers to reconsider this plan. Instead of seeing brumbies as pests, let's explore innovative ways to manage their populations and preserve our shared heritage. We can protect both our environment and the brumbies that have become part of our national story.

Please sign this petition to demand an end to the culling of our beloved brumbies, and help safeguard both these magnificent animals and our cultural heritage for future generations.
