Stop the Cruel Exotic Pet Trade in California

The Issue

Across California, thousands of wild animals are being smuggled, abused, and sold into the exotic pet trade.

Baby parrots are stuffed into bags and hidden under seats.

Toucans are crammed into dashboards with their wings taped.

One‑month‑old spider monkeys are torn from their dead mothers and smuggled across the border wearing diapers.

Many of these animals arrive frightened, starving, injured, or already dying.

California has become one of the largest hotspots in the United States for this growing crisis. Enforcement officers report surging cases of trafficked monkeys, parrots, venomous snakes, turtles, and even invertebrates like tarantulas and live corals. The majority are bound for the private pet market, often to satisfy social media trends that glamorize exotic animals as accessories or entertainment props. Behind those images is a trail of suffering that animal lovers cannot ignore.

Wild animals belong in the wild, not in dashboards, boxes, or cages in someone’s home. Many of these species are protected under international and federal law because their populations are already declining. Keeping them as pets is not only dangerous for the animals but also harmful to ecosystems and public health. Trafficked wildlife can introduce invasive species, spread disease, and disrupt fragile habitats that California has spent decades trying to protect.

Yet the agencies responsible for stopping this cruelty are understaffed and outmatched. Smuggling operations continue to grow, and some traffickers slip through the cracks with only minor penalties.

We are calling on the California Legislature and members of Congress to strengthen and pass laws that ban private ownership and illegal sale of exotic wildlife, including primates, parrots, reptiles, and other vulnerable species. We also urge lawmakers to support increased funding for enforcement so that officers can stop traffickers before more animals suffer or die.

California’s animals deserve better. The wild creatures being smuggled across our borders cannot speak for themselves. It is up to us to protect them.

Sign this petition to demand an end to the cruel exotic pet trade in California and to defend the lives of the animals who depend on us to act.
