The Issue

UPDATE:  WE DID IT, MEYERLAND AND FRIENDS! We saved our park!

At the Meyerland Community Improvements Association on November 19th, Bellaire Little League announced it would remove their request to build a field. Our collective effort ensures the park will remain a multi-use, fence-free green space for community members of all ages, supporting everything from soccer games to Tai Chi.
We have also protected our neighborhood standards. There will be no undue strain on resources—no lack of parking, no intrusive bright lights, and no excessive noise during evening hours.
This outcome is a testament to the fact that we are a resilient, tight knit community committed to the well-being of our neighborhood and one another.
Now, let us channel this incredible momentum. We invite everyone to organize with us again to enhance and enrich this treasured park for the future. We, the undersigned residents of the Meyerland neighborhood and users of Meyerland Park (5151 Jason St, Houston, TX 77096), strongly oppose any plan to convert this vital public resource into a dedicated baseball field(s) for Bellaire Little League—a league that excludes Meyerland children (EDIT: a league to which Meyerland children are not zoned) and is not based in our community or within the City of Houston.

Why This Matters:
Meyerland Park is a critical, multi-purpose area serving families, seniors, dog walkers, and individuals seeking outdoor recreation. Its open, flexible nature supports diverse activities such as:

  • Casual Recreation: Soccer, football, cricket, frisbee, and other informal play without permits or scheduling.
  • Fitness & Wellness: Running, yoga, and group exercise.
  • Community Gathering: Picnics, birthday parties, dog walking, and outdoor enjoyment.
  • Children’s Play: Safe, informal space for kids of all ages.
  • Urban Respite: A natural green escape in an otherwise dense neighborhood.

Converting this space into fenced, single-use baseball field(s) would:

  1. Displace Local Users: Remove open-access recreation for hundreds of residents. (EDIT: Remove open-access recreation of large areas used by hundreds of residents.)
  2. Increase Strain on Local Resources: Add traffic, parking issues, trash, safety concerns, noise, and light pollution negatively impacting the neighborhood’s quality of life.
  3. Prioritize External Interests: Dedicate our limited neighborhood resource to a non-local league at the expense of Meyerland residents.
  4. Reduce Equity: Replace inclusive space with exclusive facilities forcing many community members to lose their primary outdoor recreation area.
  5. Impact Lovett Elementary: Limit safe dismissal and school event access due to parking and street strain.
  6. Restrict Access:  Public use would be limited or eliminated entirely (EDIT: Public use of the multi-purpose green space would be limited)

We urge the City to:

  1. Maintain Multi-Use: Keep Meyerland Park as an open green space for all.
  2. Hold a Public Hearing: Allow residents to voice concerns before any final decision is made to change the current usage or configuration of Meyerland Park.
  3. Reject Bellaire Little League's plans to build baseball field(s) in Meyerland Park.
