In a fresh twist to the contentious Norwich Western Link saga, David Pett of the Stop Wensum Link Campaign group expressed deep concern over the near £40m expenditure already incurred in the planning stages of the project. "This is an astonishing amount spent on a road that hasn't even seen the light of day yet," Mr Pett said. "It's a stark reminder of the financial burden this project imposes before construction even begins."

However, proponents of the project, like some council members, argue that the investment will pay off in the long run. They believe the Western Link, which aims to connect the Broadland Northway to the A47, west of Norwich, will not only alleviate congestion but also spur economic growth. "We can't overlook the potential this project has for economic development," one council member pointed out. "Additionally, we're hopeful about securing government funding, which would offset a significant portion of the cost."

But critics aren't convinced. Steve Morphew, Labour group leader, and Brian Watkins, Liberal Democrat group leader, have been vocal about their opposition. "There's no Plan B," warned Morphew. "If this doesn't get government approval and funding, we've sunk millions into a dead-end project." Watkins added, "We're rushing headlong into this without considering the potential pitfalls."

Jamie Osborn, Green County Councillor, echoed these sentiments, voicing concerns about the potential impact on public transportation. "In our drive to push through with the Western Link, we risk neglecting our public transport system," Cllr Osborn cautioned. "We need to strike a balance between road development and sustainable transport options."
