The £300 million Norwich Western Link Road project has come under fire from campaigners who believe that it will hinder the UK's efforts to reach its net-zero targets. The controversy highlights concerns about the Department for Transport's policies, particularly their "road-building spree" which critics say will increase carbon emissions and contribute to climate change.

Transport is the largest emitting sector in the UK, producing 24% of the country's total emissions in 2020. There are currently 32 million cars on the UK's roads, and their number and size continue to grow. This growth is alarming to campaigners, who point to the fact that meeting legally binding net-zero targets will require a significant reduction in motor traffic.

The DfT's recent transport decarbonisation plan was amended to add 26 megatonnes of carbon emissions due to an oversight involving polluting hybrid vehicles and projections for an increase in van traffic. Campaigners have criticised the department's new policy, which requires decision-makers to ignore the negative impact of road-building and traffic but prioritise tree planting around schemes as a nature-based solution to climate change.

Chris Todd, the director of campaign group Transport Action Network, has warned that ministers "are deliberately accelerating us towards runaway climate change," and called for the government to prioritize better public transportation and cycling infrastructure over motoring.

Campaigners argue that the £300 million Norwich Western Link Road project should be cancelled, as its construction would result in higher carbon emissions and hinder efforts to achieve net-zero goals. The project is intended to connect the A47 to the western end of Broadland Northway, allowing easier access to and from the city center. However, campaigners argue that this should not take priority over reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change.

The concern surrounding the Norwich Western Link Road project highlights the challenges the UK faces in achieving its net-zero targets, especially with the escalating "road-building spree."
